Both MDF and plywood are staples in joinery and DIY — but they behave very differently on site. Here is how we help customers at our Newcastle-under-Lyme workshop choose the right board.
When MDF makes sense
MDF offers a uniform, smooth face with no grain pattern — ideal for painted furniture, routed details and applications where you want a flawless paint finish. It machines predictably and is often more affordable per square metre than hardwood-faced plywood.
For static shelving and carcasses that will be painted, 18mm MDF is a common choice. In humid areas (bathrooms, utility rooms), ask about moisture-resistant grades.
When to pick plywood
Plywood combines cross-laminated veneers for strength and screw-holding — better for structural elements, backs of cabinets, or where you need a lighter panel with real wood character. WBP or hardwood-faced ply is widely used when stability and strength matter more than a perfectly flat paint surface.
